We will hold an exhibition entitled “Hiroko Koshino – Homage to Klimt” at KH Gallery Ginza. Gustav Klimt was born in 1862. He was a painter in Vienna from the late 1800s to the 1900s. Known for his decorative works depicting a variety of women, including nudes and pregnant women, his distinctive gold works incorporate the traditional art forms of Egypt and Japan. It is said that his avant-garde ideas were controversial at the time. Koshino was overwhelmed by the Klimt paintings she encountered in Vienna and felt emotionally connected to his sensitivity to anticipate the new era and his life. As a fashion designer and an artist, Koshino was inspired by Klimt, attempting a variety of expressions from 2013 to today. This exhibition will showcase “WORK #1078 Blue Bird of Happiness”, one of the largest works of her which she created in 2013, for the first time in five years. It also features a collection of a wide range of expressive paintings, such as works that take advantage of textiles designed for Hiroko Koshino Collection, as well as works using India ink and Japanese paper, and works that allow the viewer to enjoy deep color changes and profound materials. Her most recent work, created on the occasion of appearance on a special Klimt episode of the NHK program “Nichiyo Bijutsukan” broadcast in January 2018, will also be exhibited.

Klimt pursued his own sense of beauty without being caught up in trends and common ideas of the time. We hope you will enjoy Koshino Hiroko’s innovative expression, which responds across time to Klimt’s spirit.

Hiroko Koshino The Nature

Wednesday, September 6 - Saturday, September 30, 2017 10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Gallery closed on the Sundays of September 17, and 24

“Hiroko Koshino The Nature” is being hosted at KH Gallery. You can see colors and shapes that resemble vestiges and minerals that have been excavated, in paintings by Koshino. This exhibit is a collection of profound and dignified paintings that are contrastive with works that have flamboyant hues, by expressing nature and the passage of time. These paintings, with their elegant hues of gold, silver, and black, are not merely decorative, as they have appearances resembling natural objects that have existed since the distant past, such as minerals and celestial bodies. Also, the shapes and shadows of her relief works resemble land forms that were created by the passage of time. Her obsession with texture has created art in which you can see her attention to detail.

While painting, she comes closer to expressions of nature. Also, she reconstructs ancient materials and leads us to new ones. In our current generation in which artificial items are mass produced, these pieces are valuable expressions of art. By all means, come and imagine the eternal flow of time within nature.

NIKKO × Hiroko Koshino Sumi no Toki
-The Hospitality of Hiroko Koshino-

Monday, May 15 - Sunday, June 25, 2017 10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Gallery closed on the Sundays of May 21, June 4, and 18.

“NIKKO × Hiroko Koshino Sumi no Toki -The Hospitality of Hiroko Koshino-” will be hosted at KH Gallery Ginza. NIKKO COMPANY, a manufacturer of Western-style dinnerware, and Koshino first met 30 years ago. Since then, these two have worked together to bring modern dinnerware to the world. The “Sumi no Toki” series that is being presented here is designed based on the various expressions of ink paintings done by Koshino. For Koshino, the sensibility of ink is a crystallization of the beauty of Japan. With the meeting of Western-style dinnerware and pure white fine bone china that NIKKO proudly makes in Japan, the beauty of the West and of Japan were brilliantly fused together. A profound world of black and white is expressed within the blank spaces of this dinnerware. At this exhibit, this series which has received high acclaim at exhibitions held outside of Japan will be shown alongside table settings for the first time in Japan at the KH Gallery. At the same time, the original works and a new series of ink paintings done by Koshino will be exhibited. The existence of art in everyday life is what Koshino considers to be the highest quality of hospitality.

Also, looking back at the history of the close friendship between these two, a memorial exhibit of “Ai Gasane”, Koshino-designed dinnerware welcoming the 30-year anniversary since it was first released for sale will be displayed. In a display full of a sense of playfulness, you can see best-selling Japanese-style and Western-style dinnerware that has a flowery motif.

These fine works of art that are close to our lives and that can be cherished for a long time are born from the sincerity of NIKKO and Koshino and from their long relationship. Please enjoy the aesthetics of sophisticated furnishings and hospitality.

Kuniyoshi Kaneko × Hiroko Koshino
EROS 2017

Thursday, March 16 - Sunday, May 7 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. *Closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 Gallery closed on the Sundays of March 26, April 9, and 23.

KH Gallery Ginza will be hosting “Kuniyoshi Kaneko X Hiroko Koshino EROS 2017.” One year after the Kuniyoshi Kaneko Retrospective Exhibition, the two artists join hands once again to bring you a dense world or paintings created under the theme of EROS. Kuniyoshi Kaneko pursued refined eroticism through his unique portrait paintings. Men and women who appear on Kaneko’s paintings create an unapproachable Sacred World while also showing unbridled lust. The contrast draws out the nobleness and powerful force of life of a human being who waver between two extremes. Hiroko Koshino, on the other hand, produced oil paintings themed under the relationship of men and women. Her encounter with Shunga, or Japanese erotic art from the Edo era had left her with a powerful impression. This time, she focuses on the beautiful bodily shapes of people engaging in the act of love that is vividly drawn out in Shunga artworks, and transforms them into stylish EROS. It almost seems as though joy and desire seep out from the expressions of human figures drawn with oil bars. The oil paintings inspired from Shunga are also in line with Koshino’s all-time theme, the fusion of Japanese and Western beauty.

In this exhibition, stately oil portraits and drawings which are the essence of Kaneko’s EROS will line the walls, while personal items will be displayed to reproduce the artist’s room to give visitors a sense of secret happiness as if one is peeking inside someone’s private room. Koshino will unveil the latest results of her exploration, which consist of oil portraits depicting Shunga motif paintings drawn in a light touch, thickly textured powerful portraits, and other works depicting various men and women. Take this chance to be witness to the fusion of the EROS, the most luscious and most noble drama orchestrated by the two artists who cherish the natural instincts of life.

Kimono: the Beginning of New Year -Koshino Hiroko Kimono Exhibition-

Monday, January 23 - Sunday, March 5, 2016 10:30 am - 7:00 pm Gallery closed on the Sundays of January 29, February 12, and February 26.

The KH Galleries will hold the exhibition, “Kimono: the Beginning of New Year -Koshino Hiroko Kimono Exhibition-” at the two venues of Ginza and Ashiya. With her grandfather running a kimono fabric store, Koshino had been exposed to kimono and traditional performing arts since childhood. Through this deep connection, Koshino has occasionally drawn on such elements as sources of inspiration. From time to time, Koshino would pick up a brush and produce a kimono adorning her own drawing. This practice of wearing one’s own drawing, which she has continued for more than 10 years, symbolizes the ultimate fusion of art and fashion. The pines, bamboos, cherry blossoms, and other traditional motifs depicted in light brush strokes give the kimonos significance as not only attires, but also powerful pieces of drawings. This exhibition will be presented in a creative, stylish space where such treasured kimonos are showcased with calligraphy works and drawings.

At the Ginza gallery, enchanting kimonos will be displayed with the key feature consisting of a gorgeous, three-layer formal Uchikake kimono flowing dynamically in the air. In contrast, drawings and calligraphy works created at various periods of time will line the gallery walls, inviting the audience to a brilliant world where fascinating colors overlap with vibrant words and shapes.

As we move ahead into the new era, Koshino uses kimono as a medium that transcends time to present her vision of Japanese culture and lifestyle. The KH Galleries invite you to immerse yourself in a setting capturing the Beauty of Japan to start off the New Year, where a rise in the momentum to redefine and present “Japan” to the world will be seen.

TIME AND SPACE – The Density of Time –

Friday, November 4 - Sunday, December 18, 2016 10:30 am - 7:00 pm Gallery closed on the Sundays of November 13, 27, and December 11.

KH Gallery Ginza will hold the exhibition, “Kazi Ghiyasuddin × Hiroko Koshino, TIME AND SPACE - The Density of Time -.” In pursuing abstract works that evokes the landscapes of Japan which are not mere imitations of western oil paintings, Koshino, who has hitherto produced myriads of artworks with her unique sensitivity, chanced upon Kazi’s drawings. Kazi is an energetic Bangladeshi artist who continues to produce drawings while travelling between his home country and Japan, where he has lived for some 40 years. Intellectual and abstract, Kazi’s drawings remind their audience of the landscapes and culture of Bangladesh, emanating a taste which almost resembles faith. Koshino found herself deeply relating to the spirituality of the artist devoted in drawing the things that he believes in. Likewise, Kazi had also been struck by the passion for drawing that he felt from Koshino’s masterpieces and had therefore been longing to work on a collaboration.

This exhibition will finally bring the two, distinctly independent but resonating worlds together. Kazi will showcase abstract paintings including his latest oil-painted masterpiece as well as watercolor paintings, while Koshino will present works that she had never showcased in Ginza, where her unique method of allowing non-calculated outcomes to come in to play. Beauty, according to Koshino, “transcends time and space.” Those words reflect the artist’s determination to pursue beauty that takes root in the native landscapes that she experienced herself, despite the backdrop of the chaotic confusion brought about by today’s modern society. KH Gallery Ginza invites you to come enjoy the intense artistic experience that is built upon the bond and trust which the two artists have nurtured over time.
