Hiroko Koshino
New Creations of Traditional Performing Arts

KH Gallery Ginza will hold the exhibition entitled “Hiroko Koshino -New Creations of Traditional Performing Arts”. Koshino grew up watching Kabuki with her grandfather and became acquainted with various forms of Japanese traditional culture. In particular, she has trained in Nagauta Shamisen for many years: she is an accredited performer belonging to Kinekatsukai. For the national competition of Nagauta Kinekatsukai which will be held in the Kabukiza Theatre in late April this year, she will draw the stage background for the Shokyokushu medley. This exhibition presents the new original ink paintings for the stage background, as well as Koshino’s works related to traditional culture. The original stage background paintings that she drew for famous Nagauta songs express the diverse worlds of Sumi ink. These works will be printed on large stage curtains using the technology of Seiren Co., Ltd. and will decorate the climax scene. The exhibition will also present kimono that she painted directly with a brush to wear it at the concert, as well as lacquerware that she decorated on the occasion of her exhibition in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, in 2018.

All the works displayed in the exhibition are the results of collaboration brought forth by Koshino who truly loves Japanese traditional performing arts and culture. Please enjoy the new creations that combine the value of tradition with a modern aesthetic sense, through which Koshino hopes people feel closer to the traditional art.
